While Wisconsin’s Senate Majority Leader feels there are some challenges with an Assembly bill to legalize medical marijuana, there are some good things as well.
9th District State Senator Devin LeMahieu said on WOMT’s Be My Guest program Friday (January 12th) that he likes that the bill requires medical marijuana to be prescribed by a doctor, but he doesn’t like that the state would be running the dispensaries because that to him is big government controlling something some Wisconsinites want.
“Plus there’s only five dispensaries around the state,” he explains. “So, if this is something that is truly needed by people who are suffering and it can help out people, why would we have a dispensary in Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, and maybe La Crosse. I don’t know where you’d put the fifth one but that still aways away from a lot of people in the State of Wisconsin.”

He believes medical marijuana should be allowed to be sold through pharmacies because that’s where doctors send people to get prescriptions anyway.
The bill is specifically tailored toward helping those with health problems like chronic pain and glaucoma, but smokable marijuana would not be allowed.
There’s been no vote on the bill in the assembly, but Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers says he will support this bill if it passes.
