With the recent weather conditions, a concern for many drivers is making sure they don’t get hurt or crash while on the road.
But if an accident happens by fate or because of bad driving, your insurance will go up.
Insurance Agent Todd Glover tells Seehafer News that in very bad weather if you don’t have to go out, stay home to prevent an accident altogether.
But if you do get into one, the first thing if it involves another person is to exchange information and then report it to your insurance company.
But when it comes to insurance going up, Glover says it will depend on the company you have and what kind of damage is done, and with the modern technology cars have, something as simple as a fender bender costs more than you think.
“For example, it’s significantly more than it was before,” he explained. “Let’s say you slide into somebody’s bumper. In the past, you could get a new bumper for a couple hundred bucks, but now you got a bumper and it’s full of radars, sensors, and backup cameras and so a pretty minor accident can lead to literally thousands of dollars in repairs and pretty much across the board that’s going to lead to increase in your rate.”
He also says while rates also vary company by company, sometimes there could be discounts depending on your insurance.
But that could change quickly.
“If you cause damage to another party, whether it’s their car, whether you hurt somebody, or if you slide into a building that may lead to an actual surcharge on your policy,” he described. “Not only do you lose the discount, but you actually get an increase in your policy for a period of time.”
In the end, Glover says if you do have to go out in bad weather, it’s important to know you are covered and it’s time to be safe and smart while driving.
