Sturgeon spearing is scheduled to open up in a few weeks, but some are concerned that the tradition will soon be coming to an end.
This is because the prehistoric fish is on the list of potential additions to the endangered species list, but a Congressman from Green Bay is looking to help keep the Wisconsin tradition alive.
Congressman Mike Gallagher has penned a bill that would exempt Wisconsin from any such decision, and it is being considered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
He has stated that he is a strong believer that population management for sturgeon should be done at a local level, something that has been done very well in Wisconsin.
He has pointed to several local fishing clubs that have helped track the local population and help ensure that sturgeon and other aquatic life are not overfished throughout the year.
