Negotiations went deep into Wednesday morning and resulted in Doc Rivers and The Milwaukee Bucks reaching an agreement in principle to become their next head coach.
Rivers, a Marquette alumnus and most recently an ESPN analyst, emerged as the leading candidate to replace Adarian Griffin, who was fired Tuesday after only 43 games into his first season at the helm.
The Bucks, under Griffin, were among the top offensive teams in the NBA and sported the second-best record in The Eastern Conference at 30 and 13.
Despite being known as a defensive coach, Milwaukee was at or near the bottom statistically in several categories, including last in created turnovers.
Rivers has plenty of coaching experience, most recently leading Philadelphia to three consecutive trips to the NBA Eastern Conference Semi-Finals and helping lead the Boston Celtics to the NBA title in 2008.
Assistant Joe Prunty is expected to coach the team tonight as the Bucks host The Cleveland Cavaliers.
