A Nebraska energy company still sees Two Rivers as a place where having extra energy is important.
Jarrod Pitts, Development Director with Tenaska gave a presentation at last night’s TR council meeting for a proposed battery energy storage facility.
Pitts describes the facility as “A system of batteries that’s connected to the power grid that charges batteries when there is excess energy on the system, and discharges that when power is needed most.”
The facility would be built in the Woodland Industrial Park located on Highway 310. It would be several enclosers that contain battery cells and would be enclosed by a fence for safety purposes.
Pitts says the facility would also be monitored 24/7 if built and can be shut down quickly if there are any issues.
If the city approves the project, Pitts says this year would be dedicated to getting permits and then looking at making final technology selections.
“That would allow us to make the preparations to start construction sometime in the third quarter of next year,” he explained. “It’s an approximate twelve-month construction period so that means we would be looking to have the project operational sometime in 2026.”
Council members had questions, including what would happen after the twenty-year battery life ends and will there be a physical presence of people at the sight and not just surveillance.
The city will take up this issue again at a future commission meeting and could have a resolution to vote on to move forward with the project in March.
