A Two Rivers police patrol could be returning.
Police Chief Ben Meinnert said on WOMT’s Be My Guest program last week that the department is looking to revamp its bike patrol.
The department received a large donation from resident Louann Smith, allowing them to purchase some E-bikes, or electronic bikes, that use electricity to power the bike forward.
The patrol used to be more active, but with the COVID-19 pandemic and a lack of staff, the program stopped.
But now, with a fuller staff, the program can be revamped.
“One of the detriments to that program is that you always have to not only have to be fully staffed but overstaffed,” Chief Meinert explained. “Because that person is not able to respond to a bunch of calls because you don’t want them to have to pedal across town and also be exhausted when they get there.”
The department also purchased a fat tire bike that can be used on the beach.
Meinnert calls this revamp a great opportunity for police officers to be back on the trails around the beach and in areas where there are a lot of people walking around.
