The City of Manitowoc is looking to beautify a section of the city near the lakeshore.
The Public Infrastructure Committee heard from Parks Planner Brock Wetenkamp earlier this month as he was looking for approval of funding for the restoration of Maritime Bluff, located along Maritime Drive.
Wetenkamp tells Seehafer News that the bluff has a lot of invasive species that are not only blocking the view of some residents but are also unsightly for those driving by.
“One of our aldermen came forward with an idea to restore this bluff and have pollinators and native plantings,” he explained. “They don’t just look pretty; they provide food for pollinators and birds and things like that. They hold the bluff in place, to there is a good reason for all of this.”
The City is getting some financial support from a pair of groups.
“LNRP (Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership)…provided funding for a plan for the restoration of the bluff,” Wetenkamp said. “Glarierland RC&D…actually got the grant, that encompasses different projects, but they chose our project as one they would like to support.”
In total, the project is estimated to cost around $37,800.
Between the two groups, $18,350 was given to the project, and the City of Manitowoc has already contracted $5,000.
Following the Committee’s approval, the City will be matching an additional $15,750, pending approval of the full Common Council.
