The Lakeshore Humane Society is looking to build a brand-new location.
The Manitowoc Common Council approved leasing land from the city just located north of their original location on North 8th Street near Indian Creek Park at Monday’s (February 19th) meeting.
A map of the proposal can be seen below.
Humane Society Executive Director Tina Nichols tells Seehafer News that their current building is old and has served its purpose. It’s time to move forward.
“We still have a lot of fundraising to do so we’re definitely going to be going out with a capitol campaign,” she described. “But we do have a good chunk started, we have a great sponsor so far, so the goal is to move forward and get this done hopefully by 2025.”
The organization still needs to raise about $1.5 million before their new shelter could be built.
Nichols says a large donor came forward to help jump-start this project that’s been talked about for many years by the humane society.
One of their events, Viva Paws-Vegas in March, should help raise some of the money, but after that, the organization will be looking at getting grants and going to local businesses for help to get the new shelter.
