Several wrestlers returned from the individual state matchups in Madison to an ovation of supporters.
At Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Emjay Neumann was congratulated for winning her first state championship in girls wrestling by a 4-2 decision.
She’s also the first in the school’s history since girls wrestling was allowed in Wisconsin Schools.
She tells Seehafer News she was happy and excited to be the first to do it.
Going into her matchup against Mineral Point’s Dealya Collins, Neumann explained, “I wasn’t nervous, I was just really in focus and kind of scared at the same time.”
Wrestling Coach Tyler Wetenkemp calls Emjay’s win an amazing thing and hopes she’ll go back to state to become a three-time champion in the future.
Lincoln’s Amelia Fowler was also welcomed back after a tough end to her senior season.
At Two Rivers High School, four wrestlers were welcomed back after going to state. Angie Bianchi and Justin Klinkner each won a state title in Madison.
Bianchi becomes the first girl in Two Rivers High School history to win a state wrestling title after beating Wausau West’s Savannah Danielson in a 12-0 decision.
Klinkner beat Espyn Sweers from Mauston/Nece in a 3-1 decision. They both got to sign the state spotlight in the Two Rivers High School gym in front of a good crowd of supporters.
Athletic Director Brian Gallagher says it’s pretty cool to have some more names in the spotlight.
“There’s great leadership with the coaches and the senior athletes themselves and to see all the support that we had in Madison with friends and family members is really really cool,” he said.
Chase and Max Matthias also returned from the state, with Max getting third in his weight bracket.
The wrestlers returned with an escort from their local fire departments and a combine behind them.
