$10 million in state money is coming to Eastern Wisconsin for work in the Manitowoc River.
The City of Manitowoc is getting some of that cash to aid in the dredging work in the river.
Additionally, Briess Malt has received $1 million dollars to put towards dredging to increase the number of their boats found in Manitowoc and increase product output.
Mayor Justin Nickels tells Seehafer News that this work will have a big impact on the city’s economy.
“One unique thing about the Manitowoc River is that it is a federal channel, and there are only really three on Lake Michigan: Milwaukee, Manitowoc, and Green Bay,” he explained. “We can receive some federal dollars and state dollars, but also commerce. Our economy is really dependent on the Manitowoc River.”
Manitowoc also received about $562,000 to dredge further up and closer to St. Mary’s cement.
KoneCranes obtained money as well to improve infrastructure, receiving just over $1.3 million to put towards building.
“Overall, the city of Manitowoc, statewide, received 30% of the overall harbor assistance funding,” Mayor Nickels explained. “We’ve received a lot in the past, but it just goes to show that working with these local businesses and the fact that we have a true asset in our Manitowoc River for our local economy”.
The money is coming from the state’s Harbor Assistance program.
