Mishicot Senior Adam Backus was named one of four finalists nominated for the WIAA Spirit of Sport Award.
This award recognizes individuals who exemplify the ideals of the spirit of sport that represent the core mission of education-based athletes.
In October of 2022, Adam suffered what turned out to be a life-threatening injury during football practice.
He made contact with a teammate after defending a pass and was slow to get up.
Backus began feeling worse throughout the evening and was eventually transported to the hospital, where his vitals crashed.
He was diagnosed with and underwent a procedure to repair what was diagnosed as a “grade five” splenic rupture.
After months of rehab, rest, and recuperation, he returned to play football in 2023.
Adam was named Associated Press All-State High Honorable Mention at defensive back, all-state honorable mention by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association and earned first-team All Packerland Conference honors.
Backus was also named Mishicot’s Most Valuable Player and Indians Tram Captain. Micheal Turner of Hartford Union High School was named the recipient of the award.
Zoe Coder of West Salem and Dodge Shore of Hillsboro High School joined Backus as finalists for the award.
