Some work has been done on a project by the Wisconsin Maritime Museum.
The museum announced in December they are doing a major renovation project for their building on Franklin Street to create the Wisconsin Maritime Heritage Center.
Executive Director Cathy Green says the building is being rehabbed by removing the old façade and returning to the original brick.
She continues saying Phase 1 of the project is almost done, but the weather needs to improve to finish the rest of the façade and painting.
Phase two involves the construction of the Maritime Heritage Plaza and Gardens. Green says the plaza will include an education space and more storage for artifacts.
“We envision this to be a place where folks not only wanting to learn some of the maritime trades like carpentry can come and gain that skill,” she stated. “They can work on our collections helping to restore boats and get some training on some of these maritime trades.”
Some artifacts the museum has will also be on display in front of the new area.
The second project will take the entire summer to complete.
