The Manitowoc Police Department wants to honor police K9s.
The department wants to create a statue that would be placed in front of the police department, which was approved by the Manitowoc Common Council earlier this week.
Alderman Mike Cummings says this statue will highlight the K9 program, which is special to a lot of people.
He also hopes people will take pictures in front of it.
Former Alderman Steve Czekala said it’s important to memorialize and honor those who serve selflessly, and nothing is more selfless than a police dog.
“So therefore really nothing is absolutely more fitting than to have this statue memorializing our K9s that serve with our heroes on the police department,” he exclaimed.
A memo from Manitowoc Assistant Police Chief Jason Freiboth says the bronze sculpture will be named “Liberty” and will be a statue of a German Shepard created by a Colorado artist.
The project is expected to cost about $25,000, however about $10,000 has already been raised.
