Authorities say that an active shooter was neutralized near a middle school in Mount Horeb.
They added that the alleged assailant was harmed, and schools across the district were placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Initial witness reports indicate that just after 11:30 Wednesday morning, gunshots could be heard, and dozens of children were seen running.
Several dozen law enforcement vehicles camped outside the school (Mount Horeb Intermediate Center), located about 40 miles southwest of Madison.
Ambulances had also been reportedly parked in front of the high school.
Students and adults had remained barricaded in their classrooms as of 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, and other than the shooter, no one else has been reported harmed or injured.
Parents were gathering at a church, awaiting the arrival of their children.
This is a fluid situation, and updates will be provided as the situation warrants.
