The City of Manitowoc reminds residents to please keep all grass clippings or other yard waste out of city streets and alleys.
Director of Public Infrastructure Dan Koski when this debris enters storm sewer inlets, it becomes wet and quickly decomposes adding unnecessary nutrients to the city’s storm water system, which eventually ends up in reducing water clarity and quality of streams, rivers, and lakes.
Koski adds that grass and other debris can plug storm pipes and cause flooding that’s picked up by sweet sweepers, plus what must be picked up by sweet sweepers needs to be sent to landfills and costs tax dollars.
Citizens are asked to direct the blower away from the street and clean up any grass clippings that make it to the street.
