A good man died on Wednesday night, May 15th, at 8:45 PM. He was a good husband, a good father, and a good teacher. He loved his God, his family, and his students with all his heart. And we will miss him so much.
Robert Mack Slattery was born on November 1, 1942, in Manitowoc, WI, to Bonita (Mack) and Lester Slattery. He was educated at Saint Boniface and Lincoln High School (1961) in Manitowoc, WI. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Menominee, WI, Manitowoc County Teachers College, and graduated from Lakeland College with a Bachelors of Education. During his younger years, he also went to the “School of Hard Knocks”, a.k.a.: Northern Food Products of Manitowoc, WI, where he was employed as a truck driver during the summers, delivering fruits and vegetables to restaurants and grocery stores throughout Door County, WI. He also earned his Masters Degree in Counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh as well.
Not only was Mack a truck driver, he was primarily a teacher for the Two Rivers Public School District. Throughout his 33 year career, he taught at J.F. Magee Elementary School, L.B. Clarke Middle School, and Washington High School, mainly as a math teacher. He also spent some of his professional time as a guidance counselor at these locations as well. One specific honor Mack had was that he coached at least five L.B. Clarke Middle School Math Bowl Teams that won the Roncalli Math Bowl Invite. Mack retired from professional teaching in June, 1999.
Mack is survived by his beloved wife, Anne, and his children: Matthew (Mary Kay) of Two Rivers, WI, Brian (DeAnne) of Carmel, Indiana. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Erin (Alex Gleichner) and Colman; Molly (Jesse Silcox), Grace (Matt) Perryman, Abigehl, step-grandchildren: Aiden and Lexi.
Mack is further survived by his nephews Patrick and James Jr. Slattery and niece Mary Slattery; brother-in-law Donald Fogltanz, Sr., his nephews James and Donald, Jr. and niece Anne Louise Senglaub.
Lastly, he is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Connie and Susie, and brother James, Sr.
Mack loved his hobbies of woodworking, stained glass, rosary making, gardening, and reading. He also loved all of his dogs, especially Foxy and Lady Ruby Tuesday. Most of all though, he loved his former students, friends, and family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Grand, 1416 Grand Avenue, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Jason Blahnik. Mack will be laid to rest at Calvary Catholic Mausoleum. The family will greet relatives and friends from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Grand. Following the funeral service a luncheon will be held at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center, 620 N. Water St., Manitowoc, located on the south property of the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home.
