Tourism in Wisconsin had a record-breaking $23.7 billion economic impact in 2022. Of that, $216 million was spent in Manitowoc.
Visit Manitowoc revealed those numbers during a breakfast held Tuesday morning at The Wisconsin Maritime Museum in conjunction with National Travel and Tourism Week.
Mayor Justin Nickels says tourism is a “major staple” of the city’s economic health and success. He tells Seehafer News,
“Manufacturing and Commerce are number one, but a major part of our economy is tourism. Seeing things like the car ferry starting its season sends a “major bolt” of excitement through our small businesses, especially in the downtown and the entire community. Tourism is on the rise in Manitowoc.”
Tourism Director Courtney Hanson says she’s not “totally shocked” but pleasantly surprised, adding that they (the city) have had to adjust to changing times from the latest in technology to cater to those who visit Manitowoc via the S.S.Badger.
“Those people are coming into our community, so excited to experience Manitowoc, but they can’t for the vast majority of their trip search for Manitowoc online.” She adds,
“They need that printed piece because there’s no wi-fi in the middle of the lake (Michigan). We really need to meet visitors where they are. With that in mind., we are adding four information kiosks throughout the city this summer.”
Hanson says “tourist input” is vital to their overall plan(s), which include preparation for the NFL Draft in Green Bay in April 2025.
“We know they’re going to be thousands of people driving past. We want them to drive through and stay in Manitowoc and enjoy the activities we have planned for the draft.” She emphasizes,
“We know that Green Bay does not have enough hotel rooms. Reservations are going quickly (in Manitowoc), and we’re working with our lodging partners to make sure that rates are competitive for that weekend.”
Manitowoc’s Tourism Director adds that plans for the city’s involvement in the draft will be revealed soon.
Despite a short Badger sailing season in 2023, Hanson is expecting similar or higher numbers for 2023, which are expected to be released this summer.
