The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds all fishers that the 2024 northern zone musky season kicked off on May 25th and extends until December 31st.
Fishers are permitted to fish for musky within the northern muskellunge management zone during this season, and all regulations and licensing criteria must be adhered to.
Musky are expected to be active in shallow, vegetated bays, channels, and points near shallow bays.
Effective baits for catching musky include small bucktails, jerk baits, plastics, and topwater lures.
This year, specific water bodies in the northern management zone have a new minimum length limit of 50 inches, including locations such as the Wisconsin River, Plum Lake, Turtle-Flambeau Flowage, and others in various counties.
Additionally, the DNR advises fishers to have necessary release tools on hand, such as a large landing net, long nose pliers, hook cutter, and gloves, to ensure proper release of caught fish.
For tips on responsibly releasing musky, refer to the DNR website.
