Senior Ayden Knuth and Junior Cohen Newberg are making their third consecutive trip to state, representing Manitowoc Lincoln High School at The WIAA Boys State Individual Tennis Championships in Madison.
They had a sendoff on Wednesday and left this (Thursday) morning to prepare for their first match on Friday morning.
The veteran duo is seeded third in The Division One field after recording a 29 and 1 mark through last week’s sectional meet.
In an interview with Seehafer Sports, Ayden says they, personally, view this trip to the state as “all business.”
“I feel like after we lost in the first round last year, I wanted my senior year to be special. I want to make a deep run at state and prove to myself and all who believe in me that anything is possible with hard work and dedication.”
Cohen on what makes them so successful.
“We’ve known each other and been friends for a long time. We’ve worked hard this offseason to achieve our goals, with the one left being able to stand on the podium in Madison. Knowing Ayden as a person has certainly added to our success on the court.”
Their opponent will be either from Kenosha Indian Trail or River Falls, who both come in with records of 15 and 2.
Ships Head Coach Bob Feller says getting a chance to scout that match will be beneficial.
He adds that no matter who they’ll play, it’ll be tough, but regardless, he’s proud of what these two boys have accomplished.
“To be a top three seed in the state with only one loss, go through the regular season undefeated, and attain their goal of not having to play on Thursday night and get a bye and lay on Friday morning, everything is icing on the cake after that.”
Meanwhile, Coach Feller is wrapping up his 50th and final year at the helm of Ships Boys Tennis. He admits it’s bittersweet but has absolutely no regrets or complaints.
“It’s always hard to say goodbye to something, but I’ve got so many pleasant memories and have been blessed to have coached so many wonderful kids. I’m leaving with a big smile on my face.”
Cohen and Ayden take to the court at 9 a.m. Friday morning.
