You might see some islands floating on the Manitowoc River.
They aren’t naturally formed islands but are made to help improve water quality.
Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels explained in a Facebook post that the islands near the River Point District were paid for by a grant from the Fund for Lake Michigan to help improve water quality and create habitat within the river.
The islands are made from PET-recycled plastic water bottles, which have prevented 45,000 bottles from ending up in landfills.
Nearly 2,200 perennial plantings were also installed on the islands.
Nickels tells everyone to check back later this year to see what they look like when they’re fully grown.
