Concerns have arisen over the personal involvement of Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes in a recent case.
The attorney for a foster parent, who was sentenced to jail in Chippewa County this week, sent a letter to the judge alleging that Sheriff Hakes threatened to impose additional punishments on his client.
The case concluded with a plea deal resulting in an eight-month jail sentence, but the lawyer claims the sheriff is now threatening to revoke the foster parent’s work-release privileges.
The letter also mentions that Sheriff Hakes is personally acquainted with some of the witnesses involved.
This incident adds to the ongoing scrutiny of Hakes’ integrity and job performance.
The sheriff has not commented on the letter.
