Wisconsin State Superintendent Jill Underly revealed that the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) was aware of Milwaukee Public Schools’ (MPS) financial issues before last spring’s tax hike vote but chose not to disclose this information.
Speaking on UpFront, Underly explained that the DPI knew MPS was late with financial reports, risking millions of dollars in funding.
However, they opted not to intervene in the April vote on MPS’ $250 million tax increase to avoid appearing to influence local financial decisions.
