Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) are facing a projected loss of $43 million because of delayed and incomplete financial reports.
The Department of Public Instruction released its first estimate for general state aid to schools, indicating that MPS will lose funds next year due to past overpayments.
The MPS school board has not yet announced plans to address the shortfall, though raising property taxes is being considered.
Despite the significant loss, MPS’s budget for the next school year is nearly $1.5 billion, making the impact manageable.
