Manitowoc County could be getting a new sales tax.
The County Board of Supervisors is meeting tonight (July 16th) at the Heritage Center in the County Board room at 6:00 p.m.
After getting reports and hearing comments from the public, they will then decide if there will be a .5% sales tax implemented to not help with the budget deficit in the Human Service Department, but according to the agenda, will be used to reduce the property tax levy.
It was announced earlier this year that the Human Services Department could reach a $6 million deficit due to increased demand and inflation.
County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer has taken responsibility for the deficit and either proposed the sales tax or by raising property taxes.
Manitowoc County is one of four counties in the state that doesn’t have a sales tax. The sales tax would go into effect on January 1st, 2025.
