The transformation of the former Mid-Cities Mall property in Manitowoc is coming along.
Mayor Justin Nickels tells Seehafer News that crews have been tearing up the parking lot the last several weeks.
“That was because they were doing asbestos investigative work on the site,” he explained. ” The crews are now inside the building getting asbestos removal done for the entire building. That should go into early August.”
He also noted that there is some more work to do, but the site is anticipated to be “cleared, flattened and seeded sometime this fall.”
Nickels says there has been plenty of interest in building on the once-thriving Memorial Drive property.
“There’s some local and area developers interested in building there,” the Mayor said. “The interesting thing is that we haven’t even asked anybody; they’ve all come to us.”
There’s no word on what exactly will be built, but there’s speculation that much-needed market-level housing is one of the leading candidates.
The mayor anticipates demolition of the mall site to occur by no later than September.
