The special meeting for the Manitowoc Public School District on their Phase 1 consolidation plan is tomorrow.
The school board asked Superintendent Jim Feil during their regular meeting earlier this month to make changes to the Phase 1 facilities plan that would have closed two elementary schools and made Stangel Learning Center a full-time elementary school.
The board asked for a lower-cost option from Fiel for the first part of Phase 1.
In a memorandum, Feil explained the new option to still consolidate the schools in the 2026-27 school year.
However, facility upgrades would only be done to Stangel, Monroe, and Jefferson Elementary Schools $1.5 million would be budgeted from General Funds, plus $11.7 million would be borrowed in non-referendum funding.
Options for Phase 2 for middle school improvements and Phase 3 for Lincoln High School improvements would still be made by a referendum later.
This project has been underway after a facility audit for the district showed that every school needs improvements, which would cost about $450 million.
The two elementary schools that would close haven’t been named by the district, but Jackson, Madison, Franklin, and Riverview are all being considered.
