The Manitowoc Lincoln Ships high school football season is now underway.
On Monday (July 22), the Ships held their first contact day and look to reach new heights this season.
One big reason for this is that this is the first season under new Head Coach Evan Smith, an experienced former NFL player and Super Bowl Champion with the Green Bay Packers.
Wide Receiver Julian Bailey and Quarterback Holden Woodfill joined Coach Smith and Assistant Coach Ryan Brahm on the On the Line podcast to talk about the upcoming season.
When asked about expectations, Woodfill said,
“We want to compete for a state championship this year.”
Coach Smith added on by saying, “Playoffs is the expectation. The expectation is to go out there and get in the dance, the goal is to compete for a state title.”
Bailey said that in seasons past, he was a bit lenient with his teammates, but that has changed as he’s embraced being a leader in his senior season.
He also understands that the expectations they’ve set for themselves require more from the team’s leaders, including him.
He said, “Me, as a leader, I should definitely have more energy and get on them more. I want to show them the expectation of what we need to do and what we want to be.”
After a disappointing season last year, Coach Smith, Woodfill, and Bailey look to right the ship this season.
The Ship’s season will set sail on Friday, August 22, against De Pere at Ron Rubick Field.
