The application due date to apply for Upriver Lakes spearing tags is quickly approaching.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reminds spearers that August 1st will be the final date to apply.
Given the higher success rates in the Upper Lakes, only 500 licenses will be issued for sturgeon spearing in lakes Poygan, Winneconne, or Butte des Morts for the 2025 season.
These licenses will be distributed through a drawing that prioritizes applicants with the most preference points.
For group applicants, the group’s point value will be determined by the member with the fewest points in the group.
Additionally, applicants have the option to purchase preference points instead of applying for a spearing tag.
Applicants chosen to buy an Upper Lakes sturgeon spearing license will be informed by October 1st.
Those not selected will receive a preference point for future drawings and can purchase a Lake Winnebago spearing license.
Spearers can apply for an Upriver Lakes tag or buy a preference point online on the Go Wild system or at a license sales location.
