Manitowoc 19u Post 88 jumped out to a 3-to-nothing lead in the opening inning against Marshfield but would score no more in a 4 to 3 loss to The Post 54 Devil Bears in an elimination game at The American Legion AAA State Baseball Tournament in Wisconsin Rapids Wednesday.
First baseman Gavin Lettenberger of Manitowoc Lincoln had a two-run single, and Damien Gretz of Two Rivers added a sacrifice fly to give Post 88 an early 3-run lead.
Marshfield cut the lead to 3 to 1 in the bottom of the third inning on Chase Robinson’s run-scoring single.
The Devil Bears took the lead for good, scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth inning on singles by Robinson and Blake Raab.
They also turned two double plays to help get out of some jams.
Aden Cherney was Marshfield’s winning pitcher. He pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (only one earned) on four hits, walking two, and striking out two.
Seth Gibeault took the loss for Manitowoc, going six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits, walking two, and striking out three.
Lettenberger led Post 88 offensively, going 2 for 3 at the plate with those two runs batted in.
