Several communities in northeast Wisconsin and Fox Valley experienced a rare event for the Upper Midwest as an earthquake was recorded Friday morning in Lake Michigan.
The United States Geological Service says the 2.9-magnitude quake occurred around 9 a.m., about 24 miles from Sturgeon Bay.
It was felt in, but not exclusive to, Sturgeon Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, Fish Creek, and De Pere.
The USGS states that certain locations along the coast may have experienced a slight increase in wave activity, but the quake and its aftereffects posed no harm to the public.
In fact, earthquakes of this magnitude are rarely felt and, if at all, produce aftershocks. No damage was reported.
This is the second recorded earthquake recorded in Wisconsin this year, as a 2.5 magnitude quake was recorded near Crandon in January.
