Kites Over Lake Michigan will have its 19th and final show this Labor Day Weekend at Two Rivers High School.
City Manager Greg Buckley says it’s ending in part because founder Chow Chung is retiring soon. He tells Seehafer News—
“We as a community hope to see some event fill that void on Labor Day weekend, perhaps involving kites, but as for those who organize and run the event, they say that they’ve run their course.”
Kites Over Lake Michigan began in 2005, drawing tens of thousands from around the nation to Neshotah Beach to enjoy the pageantry of some of the most beautiful and artistic kites in the skies above Two Rivers.
But, rising waters over the years reducing beach size and space, forced the event to move to The High School in 2020, which Buckley says has been a blessing in disguise.
“We did some groaning. It was a necessity that we moved the event from the beach to the high school with the high water levels that we experienced on Lake Michigan several years ago.”
Buckley adds—
“We still don’t have as much beach space as we used to, but the neat thing is that we have a lot of people at the high school, and the beach is full because it’s Labor Day weekend. It turns out we are accommodating a lot of people in The Cool City to enjoy the many activities we have to offer.”
The Two Rivers City Manager adds that positive room tax receipts are running about 11 percent above last year and approximately tripled from five to six years ago, indicating people are flocking to “The Cool City” to enjoy the many offerings such as “Kites Over Lake Michigan.”
Kites Over Lake Michigan will be held on Saturday, August 31st, and Sunday, September 1st, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
