The month of August in Wisconsin is always a busy time for landlords and tenants, especially in college communities with rental house move-ins and move-outs.
Last year, there were 2,208 complaints to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection about landlords and tenants.
This year and for years to come, the DATCP is reaching out to help all parties in rental housing agreements.
Some tips when moving out include,
- Asking the landlord for a walkthrough of the space before the final checkout.
- Taking high-quality, detailed photos of the property during the final walkthrough.
- Provide the landlord with your new address to secure the security deposit in a timely manner.
- Landlords must return security deposits within 21 days after the rental period expires (minus any withholdings).
The DATCP has more tips for moving in as well,
- When a security deposit is required, tenants have seven days after the start of their tenancy to inspect the space and notify the landlord of any issues by returning a check-in sheet.
- All landlords must provide the contact information (including their name and address) of a person who can be contacted regarding maintenance issues.
- Read through the lease thoroughly to understand all requirements.
