The Manitowoc Public School District is getting ready for the upcoming school year.
Superintendent Jim Feil was on the WCUB Breakfast Club last week to talk about how new teachers are already coming back this week for training before all staff return to the district on August 26th.
Events to welcome teachers back begin at Manitowoc Lincoln High School.
“We start with a breakfast, then essentially, we meet in a Lincoln High School auditorium,” he explained. “Our board members will be there. Other people will be there celebrating their coming back and our excitement for the future. And we’ve got some great things planned for the week, you know, in terms of obviously bringing everybody up to speed.”
The return at Lincoln High School also includes guest speakers and getting everyone ready for the upcoming year.
There will also be training for the Success for All (SFA) program that the district adopted last year.
Feil says this year there will be more focus on getting middle and high school students reading scores up after what he showed were improvements in reading at the elementary school level.
Feil continued to praise the curriculum, saying, “There’s best practices…For example, cooperative learning that helps kids learn together. So they own their learning more. You know, the teacher lectures, three or four kids are always answering questions that’s no longer there. All kids need to be involved.”
SFA has faced criticism from board members and the public after how quickly it was implemented in the district without input.
