Manitowoc County’s Sheriff wants to make sure mental health is being taken care of in his department.
Sheriff Dan Hartwig explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that he wants to implement a program called a “Neck up Checkup.”
It would allow staff to get their mental health checked once a year. The program would be placed into the 2025 Sheriff’s Office budget at the county level.
Hartwig says although it’s not cheap, it’s important.
“I’m hoping that the county board will support that endevor,” he said. “I think that also goes to our recruitment and retention plan as well. Especially for a 30-year career in law enforcement, the amount of trauma that you both experience, see, and vicariously see through other people. We need to do our best to make sure that we’re taking care of our staff.”
The checkups are part of an initiative to help law enforcement around the nation who might suffer from some kind of mental challenge due to an incident or other factor as a part of their job.
Hartwig says mental health is still a concern and it’s important to help the helpers.
