The city of Manitowoc is getting a grant to help clean up the River Point District.
An announcement from the Wisconsin DNR says three $75,000 grants, including the one for Manitowoc, were awarded to investigate environmental contamination.
The grant for Clipper City will be used to sample soil and groundwater on the northwestern part of the River Point District.
The site was used back in the day as a lumber mill and coal storage and docking area.
Mayor Justin Nickels tells Seehafer News the area will then be turned into housing.
The other two grants go toward the city of Brillion and Calumet County. Brillion will use the $75,000 for the assessment of a 5 acres site within the Brillion Iron Works Brownfield redevelopment area.
Brillion wants to redevelop the site into a boutique, hotel, meeting space, and restaurant.
The grant also goes toward the investigation of groundwater and soil conditions.
Calumet County will use the grant money for studying an almost two-acre Brownfield property close to Lake Winnebago in Quinney.
The Wisconsin DNR says since 2009, $3.3 million has been given to 70 communities partnering to help clean up and redevelop often run-down or underused properties that detract from a community’s potential.
