The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an uptick in check fraud.
The fraudsters have been stealing mail, looking for checks, and then altering the information so they can cash it themselves.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to consider paying digitally to help keep themselves safe.
You can also use your bank to send checks on your behalf, use secure mailboxes such as the big blue ones at the post office, and even change which pen you write with.
Black gel pens have an ink that is more difficult to remove, thus making the checks more difficult to alter.
And, of course, keep your bank information safe.
Don’t share or post your bank account information anywhere publicly, and never share account information with anyone.
