Over seven thousand businesses in Wisconsin are set to receive refunds after falling victim to a business certificate scam.
According to State Attorney General Josh Kaul, two Florida-based companies sent out misleading mailers that appeared to be from a government office, urging businesses to purchase a certificate of status for $72.
In reality, businesses are not required to have these certificates, and they could be obtained from a state agency for just $10.
The companies and their owners have been ordered to pay $3.5 million, which includes $600,000 in refunds for the scammed Wisconsin businesses.
