Governor Tony Evers and U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin have announced the Direct File Program will be available to Wisconsin taxpayers for the 2025 tax season.
The Direct File Program of the IRS allows eligible taxpayers to file their taxes for free with the IRS directly rather than using a third-party tax-prep company.
These third-party companies often charge substantial fees to file one’s taxes, and this program aims to make filing taxes faster, cheaper, and easier for Wisconsin residents.
According to the U.S. Department of Treasury, the average taxpayer spends roughly 13 hours and $270 to prepare their taxes every year.
The Direct File program was launched as a pilot program last year in 12 states.
Those using the program received over $90 million in tax refunds and saved roughly $5.6 million in tax preparation fees.
This project was made possible by the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act by the Biden-Harris Administration to lessen the financial burden that Americans are under.
The Direct File program has been rolled out nationally after the success it saw last year.
