The City of Manitowoc will be discussing speed limits.
The Common Council approved establishing a subcommittee to discuss inconsistencies in speed limits.
The discussion stems from action taken against changing the speed limit on a portion of Waldo Blvd from 25 to 35 miles per hour.
Alderman Eric Sitkiewitz told the Manitowoc Public Safety Committee that speed is very inconsistent in the city.
“I think it’s easy to look around and say that there’s some inconsistencies,” he told the group. “And if the committee was interested in looking at being consistent, that’s why I asked that, at least the committee takes a look at it.”
Alderman Todd Reckelberg echoed the issues, explaining that residents told him that they didn’t like the speed limits on North Rapids Road.
Police Chief Nick Reimer explained that the city has speed limits where they are on purpose.
He says it doesn’t make sense for some streets.
“In my opinion, this should be a case-by-case situation,” the chief said. “If we want to talk about neighbors complaining about roadways and speed limits, then we do what we’ve done in the past and bring it here and say, let’s talk about this.”
Committee Chairman Tim Boldt also commented, saying, “I would like to, in the current time, see us get together and have a good discussion on it to see if we can come up with get rid of some of these that don’t and possibly make it uniform on those that we are talking.”
According to the agenda for the Public Safety Committee meeting, Alderman Brett Vanderkin and City Attorney Eric Nycz will create the speed subcommittee.
It’s not known when the group will meet for the first time.
