The city of Two Rivers could add a new ordinance regarding outdoor lighting.
Some residents in the Cool City aren’t happy with how some lights are left on, in some cases, all night long.
Andre and Susan Robitaille spoke during the council’s work session meeting about a property nearby which Susan says doesn’t turn off their lights at night.
She also told the council that there are other residents who’ve accepted that their neighbors aren’t turning off their outdoor lighting and are putting up blankets to block the light from coming in.
Robitaille asked the council to bring forth some commonsense ordinances for outdoor lighting.
City Manager Greg Buckley says other cities have some type of ordinance.
“Manitowoc has a few regulations that relate to the brightness of outdoor light and casting it on neighbors’ properties,” he explained. “Citizens have also provided us with some examples from other communities including Egg Harbors’.”
This could be put under a zoning ordinance, but that might cause some legality issues according to city attorneys.
The council asked questions about what should be done about motion sense lights that give the homeowners a sense of safety.
Buckley says city staff will investigate this further and could come back with a new ordinance at a later meeting.
