The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is showing off artifacts from another part of Manitowoc’s shipbuilding history.
Executive Director Kevin Cullen explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program about Artifacts of the Manitowoc 28.
That’s the number of submarines built in Manitowoc during WWII from the USS Cobia to USS Mero.
It takes place on September 12th from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. Cullen explains that there will be artifacts not normally on display from some of the submarines.
“This is an opportunity for folk to come in and see some of these rare gems that we have as well that relate to these subs,” he explained. “From a christening of the USS Guavina. That was a 1943 submarine launched in Manitowoc.”
The person in charge of the artifacts is Archivist and Collections Manager Serena Stuettgen.
She’ll be there show off the artifacts that are not on display from the 28 submarines already. Stuettgen will also explain what it’s like to care for the artifacts on a day-by-day basis.
Tickets for the event are $35 for non-museum members or $30 for members.
Space is limited.
