One of the groups helping with this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the ADRC of the Lakeshore.
Dementia Care Specialist Ariel Koenig explained on the WCUB Breakfast Club that all the money raised during the walk goes back to Alzheimer’s research.
Right now, Koenig says there is only medication to help treat symptoms of the disease, and it is most effective in the early stages of the disease.
“You’ve got the most health neurons that you’re ever going to have,” she described. “And the medication kind of provides a protective coating if you can envision it like that. So, if you wait to take medication or if you wait to get a diagnosis to receive the treatments, you’re not going to have as many healthy neurons for the medication to work with.”
Everyone who walks can stop at what’s called the Promise Garden.
Koenig explains it’s the place to see flowers that connect people to the disease with the colors blue, purple, yellow, and orange meaning something different.
There are volunteer opportunities still available as well.
“We’re always looking for volunteers to help staff the various tents and tables that we have,” she explained. “If you curious into what that looks like, feel free to call our walk coordinator, his name is CJ Werley. And his number is 414-296-5102.”
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Manitowoc starts at 10:00am on Saturday, September 7th.
Everyone can start to arrive at the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA at 8:30 am.
