The Kiel Police Department is reminding drivers to be responsible when driving around a school bus.
With the start of the public school year for many, Kiel Police reminds drivers that state law requires everyone to stop at least 20 feet from a school bus with a flashing red warning light no matter which direction they’re approaching.
The only exception is whenever someone is driving on the opposite side of a divided road separated by a median or other physical barrier.
Drivers are also reminded to stay at least 20 feet back from the bus to provide a safe space for children to get on and off.
Kiel Police also explained that when the lights on a school bus are yellow, the bus slows down, so you need to be prepared to stop.
If the lights are red, you have to stop.
The police department finishes by saying that you also need to be patient when following a school bus since they stop constantly.
