Despite a slow start, the Manitowoc Lincoln football team is confident that positive changes are being made.
The Ships have been outscored by a total of 97-6 in their first 2 games this year with the only points of the season coming from a special teams blunder by Ashwaubenon.
Ships head coach Evan Smith admits he is partially to blame for the slow start.
“I gotta get back down to the simple, easy, repeatable plays that we can get good at,” he explained. “Then we can start building back out from there.”
Giving up nearly 100 points in 2 games is not only the defenses fault, but coach Smith say the offense is also to blame.
“We have done our defense no favors for sure,” he admitted. “We definitely put them in a lot of bad spots off the bat.”
That being said, the defense is still working to find its identity.
“We just want to see improvement as far as their playstyle I think we’re finally starting to get the right fits out there,” Smith noted. “When you’re one of something, guys are still trying to find their kind of nitch.”
As the Ships prepare to take on Oshkosh North their first FRCC south opponent, Coach Smith says the real season starts now.
He said, “Now, we’re just trying to cut it down and get enough reps, so these guys get real comfortable with it so we can go into this game feeling confident.”
The Ships will take on the Spartans tonight in their second of four consecutive road games.
