Low-income housing set to be built in Sheboygan has passed the environmental assessment, paving the way for construction to begin.
The Gateway Apartments, a 44-unit complex aimed at low-income community members, was approved last year to be built between North 13th Street and Erie Avenue.
The environmental assessment determined that building these apartments would have no negative effects on the environment, which currently is a vacant grass plot.
It was determined the only effects construction of the complex would have would be positive.
One of these effects includes supplying desperately needed low-income housing for Sheboyganites.
Following a 2021 study it was shown housing opportunities in Sheboygan are, in general, sparse as is, however, the city deemed the lack of low-income housing as a critical need in Sheboygan.
The construction of the Gateway Apartments will transform a plot of land serving no use to the people of Sheboygan into an opportunity for low-income and possibly homeless individuals to find a place to call their own.
