A mild winter is being blamed for a decline in tonnage at the Port of Green Bay.
Port Director Dean Haen reports that the 146,176 tons received in August brought their year-to-date total up to 1,010,804.
That is about 8% less than they had received at this point last year.
As mentioned, the mild winter did result in less alt being imported, but Haen also noted, “The Great Lakes have also seen a slight decrease in July and August limestone totals from a year ago.”
Even so, limestone remains the most imported cargo, with 54,725 tons coming into the Port of Green Bay.
Cement was the second most imported item, with just over 49,000 tons coming in, followed by 26,000 tons of petroleum products and 16,000 tons of coal.
Additionally, during the month of August, the Port saw 18 ships enter, bringing the year-to-date total to 102 vessels.
During the same period last year, 100 ships visited the Port.
