The Door County Sheriff’s Office is responding following some community backlash after a pig was euthanized by a deputy.
Last Friday (September 20th) at 6:40 p.m., Door County Sheriffs were made aware of the incident after the pig had been on the loose for several days.
In another post on their Facebook page, Sheriff Tammy Sternard says that someone called 911 about the pig because it was on the roadway on Highway 42 in the southern part of the county, and when a deputy arrived, the pig went into a ditch.
Sternard says because of how close the pig was to the highway and how much of a danger it was causing, the pig was shot.
Some in Door County have expressed their frustration on social media for the actions of the deputy.
A Kaukauna nonprofit called Saving Snouts also posted on their Facebook page about the incident saying they would have helped to get the pig back to the owner.
Sheriff Sternard finished her statement saying deputies appreciate the community’s concern and they place a high priority on maintaining a professional level of service in every area of our responsibility and recognize the importance of ethics and commitment to our duties, protecting the public and this incident is no different.
