City of Manitowoc Fire Chief Todd Blaser is reminding residents about open burning laws within the city.
The city’s municipal code states that there are two separate types of fire pits, portable and built in ground with both having regulations.
They must be placed 10 feet from a fence or overhang and six feet from a lot line.
Residents who use portable fire pits, the city ordinance says they have to be no less than 10 feet away from a structure and must have a screen cover.
Built-in fire pits must be at least 25 feet away from a structure with metal rings no more than 3 feet in diameter and must be surrounded on the outer diameter with non-combustible materials.
Manitowoc’s open burning ordinance also states that only non-chemically treated wood can be burned in a fire pit and can’t include grass clippings, trash, or other materials.
Smoke from a fire can also be considered a nuisance if someone calls the police.
