The Manitowoc County Mariners have their new “old” head football coach.
On WOMT Sports Talk from The Wharf in Manitowoc Monday night, Marcos Alfaro Sr, who coached the Mariners from 2010 to 2019, announced that he’s returning to the sidelines after a five-year hiatus.
He succeeds Brent Luebke, who stepped down earlier this month.
“If we don’t have sponsors and coaches and especially the support of the players’ families, we don’t have anything here. So, I thought to myself, who better to take over this coaching job than someone who’s been through it all,” he told hosts Brian Norton and Craig Dillon. “Quite honestly, I thought I was the best man for the job and it’s time to get back to business here.”
Alfaro has been involved with the Mariners since its inception in 2010 and has served in multiple roles including owner and coach.
During his decade-long run in the 20 teens, the Mariners were 65 and 34, and won three consecutive Wisconsin State Football League championships in 2015, ’16, and ’17, during which they won 29 consecutive games.
He has an overall record of 80 and 39 as a head coach and served as offensive coordinator for the Brown County Blackjacks in the spring of “17 when they captured the Northern Lights Football League Championship.
Alfaro added he just plain missed coaching.
“Last year, I took a year off, my first since the fall of 2003. But I really missed it,” he explained. “I missed being around the guys, the competition, and the relationships you make with people through coaching football. I was prepared to take another year off until this opportunity with Mariners came by.”
The Mariners will hold an open tryout for the 2025 season on December 7th.
