Scammers have now begun targeting free COVID test kits being given out by the federal government.
This year, the federal government is offering free COVID test kits, and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning of reported scams.
Shipping of the kits is also free, so the only information required or requested is your name and shipping address.
Optionally, an email address can also be given for shipping updates.
Anyone asking for more information than this is a scammer and should be avoided and reported.
Scammers are also offering false promises of special access or extra tests, another warning sign of a scam.
The FTC urges people never to click links in unexpected emails or texts, regardless of how real they may appear.
They also ask that no credit card, bank account, or Social Security number be given, as no federal government employee will ever request this sensitive info over email or text.
If you believe you have been subjected to this scam, you can report it online at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
